I heard “Too Bad” on the drive to work Friday – you can’t stop singing along real loud even though it may ring a bit to close to home. My favourite concert band for over 20 years. He was charismatic as hell. I felt that I knew Doug. There were hot summer evenings 1980 and 1981 at the Commodore. The windows open, slime green lighting and slow dancing to “Partly from Pressure”. Living overseas in the 80’s, “Real Enough” was always played at parties. About 1994/95 the Slugs playing at the Eldorado Hotel on Kingsway. A $4 cover with half to a charity and $3 pints – I was in heaven. Sitting with my back to bar watching the show, the guy beside me says has got together with ex just to see Doug. At the end of the show Doug walks around shakes our hands and thanks us for coming. A few years later at the Boo Pub in Coquitlam this time breaking in a new wife to my Slug fixation – she was OK with it. The last time was the Slugs 25th anniversary at the Commodore in December 2003 with a large group of old friends. As great as ever. Thank you, Doug. I still smile remembering 20 years of concerts and listening to your songs.

Wow, I did not even realize Doug had left us. I thought you guys were still touring .. was I out of the picture . .. well just busy .. anyway 4 years later I recall running followspot a few times at Barrymores in Ottawa while Doug and the Slugs were in town. I will never forget
Doug jumping up on tables and playing the crowd out so well. He was a great person to talk with and I really liked and still like to hear your music played. I will miss him, too all his family my deepest sympathy although I realize I am quite late .. but he will be missed in the industry for sure .. he had a one of a kind voice that I can still hear without even playing the music.

May he rest in peace,

Andrew Gladish
